BIG MONA MOMMA

3D printed sculpture and avatar performance

A 3D printed avatar-sculpture and performance in which 17 parts make up the main piece, assembled through a performative action. The work was first exhibited in the solo exhibition Amazona ou a Dança das Resistências , at MACRS – Museu de Arte Contemporânea do RS/Brazil (2024-2025).

The sculpture is based on the character Big Mom from the 3D video AzoneCyborg (2022). In this feminist science fiction narrative, the character Big Mom , a sort of postman, has multiple breasts spread across her body, a vulva on her belly, a penis split in half, and a scanner of my real head. A hybrid representation of a body with no defined gender or with multiple gender nuances in a post-patriarchal society.

At the beginning of the performance, I read excerpts from Staying with the Trouble by Donna Haraway, with all the pieces spread out on the floor. Then, I begin assembling the avatar/sculpture.

"In Greek mythology, the Amazons were warriors who, according to some legends, cut off their own breasts to better wield bows and arrows. A violent process to ensure their own safety, since the presence and location of their breasts limited their movements, hindering their dexterity and precision in using these weapons. In other words, self-mutilation as a defense strategy. (...) With the pieces joined together, the amount of breasts that surround this body becomes evident, occupying a large part of the surface of the sculpture. Breasts that, instead of being mutilated to ensure a safe form of existence, become abundant. Breasts that, resignified, come to symbolize resistance."
